8 p.m.

Vince Averill, Jesse Popp, Matt McCarthy, & Greg Johnson: Riverside Arts Center.

Jan. 23 & 24. Stand-up comedy by these popular New York-based comics. Averill has a smart, understated style that usually revolves around quirky urban types like "super old yoga lady" and the homeless guy with better clothes than his own. Popp's routines make fun of the mundane - horoscopes, infomercials, and the disappointments of becoming a "grown-up." McCarthy's energetic style complements his no-holds-barred indictment of stupidity. Johnson's routines revolve around stories from his own life, from skipping work to play video games to being disappointed in the public library's CD collection. Riverside Arts Center, 76 N. Huron, Ypsilanti. Tickets $12 in advance at brownpapertickets.com and at the door. 480-ARTS.

24

Saturday

January 2009
2 & 8 p.m.

“Language Is My Friend”: The Firefly Club.

Local performance artist Jeffrey Steiger reprises his acclaimed one-man multimedia show, a collage of narrative, slides, and music exploring the relation between humans and the language they use--and that uses them. The show is a kind of play within a play, a tragicomedy performed unwillingly by a man who is one of the few remaining humans in a postapocalyptic world. The Firefly Club. Tickets $10 in advance by reservation and at the door. 665- 9090.
