This panel discussion is part of the ISR-sponsored event series celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.According to the United States Census Bureau, 13.8 percent of Michigan residents lived below the poverty line in 2011. For children, however, the figure is much higher. In Michigan, 548,000 children, or 24.4 percent of all children in the state live in households earning less than $18,123 per year (for a family of four). This discussion will address what is being done to address child poverty, what new approaches should be considered, and the consequences of simply continuing the same policies.Speakers are: Renée Wilson-Simmons and J. As part of the photography exhibit "Places for the Spirit - Traditional African American Gardens" at Matthaei Botanical Gardens Jan. 18-March 10, the Botanical Gardens is hosting two free public lectures by "Places" photographer and author Vaughn Sills on January 29 at 2 & 7 p.m.The topic of the lectures is The Roots of Trust. This in-depth, interactive 6-hour series meets either all-day Saturday or two consecutive Sunday afternoons or two consecutive Monday nights. The series covers a wide range of topics in-depth based on Lamaze International's Six Healthy Birth Practices, including: •the various stages of labor, birth, and early postpartum;; •relaxation and breathing techniques, comfort measures and positions for labor and delivery; •partner's role with laboring mom; •pain management options and birth interventions; hospital procedures, and Cesarean birth.
