Spring Concert: Women's Chamber Chorus. David Perample directs this independent 30-member local women's chorus in a varied program TBA. Piano accompanist is Leslie Austin. "Sancta Maria: 17th-Century Songs and Sonatas Celebrating Motherhood": St. Andrew's Episcopal Church/Academy of Early Music. A trio of well-known local early-music specialists - soprano Deborah Friauff, cornettist Kiri Tollaksen, and organist Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra - are joined by Canadian Baroque trombonist Linda Pearse in a program of Italian devotional music to Mary, the mother of Christ. The program features selections from Monteverdi's Marian Vespers, 2 pieces by the Benedictine nun Chiara Margarita Cozzolani, and works by Cima, Picchi, and Castello. Also, a 17th-century cornetto from the U-M Stearns Collection is on display during intermission. St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 306 N. James Galway: University Musical Society Ford Honors Program. Performance by this recipient of the 2008 UMS Distinguished Artist Award, a celebrated flutist whose superb technical skill and animated stage presence have earned him the nickname "the man with the golden flute." He is joined by his wife, the acclaimed flutist Jeanne Galway , for Franz Doppler's Rigoletto Fantasy. His program also includes Poulenc's Sonata for Flute and Piano, Philippe Gaubert's Madrigal and his Nocturne et Allegro Scherzando, Antonio Bazzini's "La Ronde des Lutins," and Cecile Chaminade's Concertino. Accompanist is pianist Phillip Moll . Also, a brief musical tribute to Galway by a youth choir and the Southeast Michigan Flute Association. Followed by a gala dinner fund-raiser ($300 & up). "Mother's Day Afternoon: Songs from and for Young Girls": Riverside Arts Center Fund-Raiser. Acclaimed soprano Lisa Saffer , an Ann Arbor native who has been featured in starring roles with the New York City Opera and the English National Opera, is accompanied by U-M piano professor Kathryn Goodson in a program of songs by Wolf, Strauss, Ravel, Purcell, Schubert, Cecil Sharp, and Joaquin Rodrigo. The late Village Voice critic Leighton Kerner described Saffer as "one of those special singers whose technique and blooming sound always serves sense and emotion." Followed by a champagne reception.
