Guy Hollerin’s: “Blues to the Rescue”

A Detroit blues quartet led by longtime Etta James guitarist Bobby Murray is joined by an all-star lineup of area musicians to raise money for the American Red Cross to aid victims of Hurricane Sandy. With local guitar wiz George Bedard, Detroit vocalist Joce’lyn B, Lansing vocalist Twyla Birdsong, guitar virtuoso MotorCity Josh Ford, Detroit vocalist Tosha Owens, saxophonist Joe Labeau, singer-guitarist Erich Goebel, and Groove Council vocalist Kathleen Murray. Murray’s bandmates include keyboardist Philip Hale, drummer Glenn Giordano, and bassist James Cloyd Jr. Emcee is WEMU music director Linda Yohn. $5 minimum donation. 5-8 p.m. [venue info]

Zal Gaz Grotto: Phil Ogilvie’s Rhythm Kings

This local 10-piece big band is one of the few to specialize in the old-time big-band music of the late 1920s and early 1930s associated with Jelly Roll Morton and King Oliver. Arrangements by the renowned early-jazz pianist James Dapogny and tubaist Chris Smith. [venue info]
