Basketball

U-M rec sports. Members and their guests may use the courts at the CCRB (763–3084), the NCRB (763–4560), and the IMSB (763–3562). Call for hours.

YMCA, 400 W. Washington. 996–9622. Offers open basketball Mon.–Fri. free to members, and also organizes a 10-week summer season of 4x4 games played Sun. at 3 p.m. Registration begins in early May, $25. Check online for times. www.annarborymca.com


Ice Hockey

A2Ice3 (“The Cube”), 2121 Oak Valley. 213–1600. Three rinks with year-round drop-in play and leagues for all skill levels.

Buhr Park. 971–3228. Drop-in play Nov.–Mar. (except in unseasonably warm weather) for men age 18 & over, for women of any age, and for all players age 12 & over (call for each group’s times and fees). www.a2gov.org/buhr

Burns Park. Drop-in play on outdoor rink during the winter (weather permitting).

City of Ann Arbor Parks & Recreation. Runs leagues mid-Oct.–mid-Mar., including competitive men’s and women’s programs at varying skill levels, a masters draft league for players age 30 & over, and a noncompetitive spring league for adult beginners. Soccer

Many local public schools have open soccer fields that are used primarily by youth teams.

Ann Arbor Soccer Association (AASA). Organizes open and women’s recreational leagues Apr.–Oct. Most games are played by seven-member teams on a half-size field using half-size goals. Seasons last seven to eight weeks; teams play two nights a week (Mon. & Wed. or Tues. & Thurs.) at Fuller Park; $75 fee. A co-rec league plays spring & summer Fri. nights on a full-size field with 11-member teams; $55 fee. In all leagues, participants register individually and are assigned to teams by a self-ranking system. www.aasaweb.org

Ann Arbor United Soccer Club. 975–4257. More than 750 members. Variety of youth, men’s, and women’s teams. Instructional clinics offered year round to kids age 4 & over. Spring and fall seasons, plus winter indoor play. Home games are played on various local fields; regional and national travel opportunities available. Mitchell and Elbel fields (U-M). 936–0616. Available for rental when U-M programs are not using them. A current U-M sports facilities membership is required.

Wide World Sports Center, 2140 Oak Valley. 913–4625. Indoor soccer leagues in six eight-week sessions: year round for adults, Oct.–May for youth leagues. Hosts international soccer camps during the summer. Teams of all skill levels and ages. Developmental programs for all ages, including a summer kids’ camp. Softball

Softball diamonds. About 60 are available for rental May–Aug. at Ann Arbor schools and parks. Make reservations two or three weeks in advance (994–2300, ext. 53221). Fields are $9/hour; additional maintenance fees for field grooming, chalking, and lights. The U-M’s Mitchell and Elbel fields can be rented for softball (936–0616).

Ultimate Frisbee

Ann Arbor Ultimate. Organizes coed and women’s leagues and tournaments year round. Offers free summer clinics for beginners. Summer leagues play five nights a week (Sun.–Thurs.) & spring leagues play three nights a week (Tues., Thurs., & Sun.) at Scarlett Middle School. Sign up in groups or individually. Volleyball

Pickup games. U-M recreational sports members may use the courts at the CCRB, NCRB, and IMSB. The Meri Lou Murray Recreation Center (971–6337), One on One Athletic Club (2875 Boardwalk, 761–4440), and YMCA (996–9622) each have an indoor court; call for days, fees, and times.

Sand volleyball. Rec & Ed runs leagues in summer at Wines Elementary and Slauson Middle schools. Sand courts are available for public use and and for pickup games outside the U-M Pierpont Commons, at Elbel Field at Division & Hill, and at Fuller Park. Nearby parks with sand courts include Hudson Mills Metropark and in the Pinckney Recreation Area (at Silver Lake); see Regional and State Parks, above.


Whirly Ball
