Ann Arbor School Board and District Library Elections.:Two candidates are running for one 4-year term on the 7-member nonpartisan Ann Arbor school board, and 5 unopposed candidates are running for one 2-year and four 4-year terms on the 7-member Ann Arbor District Library board. (For more information about these races, see Inside Ann Arbor, p. 11.) There are also ballot proposals to renew both the school district's operating millages on homestead and nonhomestead property and its 1-mill sinking fund tax for capital expenses. To vote in the election, you must be registered to vote in the city of Ann Arbor or in one of the surrounding townships that are included in the Ann Arbor school district.

University Lowbrow Astronomers. May 10 & 31. A chance to join local astronomy buffs for a look at the sky through instruments at the Peach Mountain Observatory. The observatory's huge, 24-inch McMath telescope is operational, but participants are encouraged to bring their own telescopes. Visitors must turn off all electronic equipment (car radios, transmitters, phones, etc.) at the observatory entrance. Program canceled if sky is overcast at sunset or if the weather is extremely inclement.

4-H. Club members and other youth show their sometimes lavishly decorated horses, demonstrate western and English riding, and compete in exciting gymkhana (speed racing) events, featuring pole bending (like slalom racing) and the cloverleaf (a race with tight turns), beginning in midafternoon (time depending on number of entrants).
